It may be a little bit too soft-batch for frequent club use, but I think it’s pretty damn ill. I kept it mad simple and just added some supporting synth stabs and basic drums and builds. For quite some time I’ve been meaning to put together a primarily Hip-Hop Club mix that represents the kind of stuff I wind up playing in the club on any given Friday or Saturday night. In many respects, playing Hip-Hop in the club can turn into club karoake, where people just want to sing along to songs they know the words to. I’m not mad at this at all because, on the rare occassion that I go out and get it in, this is basically my favorite thing to do too. But, from a DJs perspective, playing the same 25-40 records in primetime gets kind’ve old, so I tend to try and spice it up with some unexpected blends or random songs that people don’t necessarily know all the words to, but the shit still goes off. so when my homies in Burlington, Vermont asked me to do a mix for their upcoming party NIGHT VISION that I’m playing this Friday, that’s kind’ve what I wanted to make the mix represent: some predictable stuff, followed by some unpredictable blends, mashes, and remixes. All in all, just something that’s fun to listen to. So yeah, this is the type of stuff I expect to be playing this Friday in Burlington, Vermont at the NIGHT VISION party at Red Square. Been wanting to knock out a 90’s hip-hop mix forever. Hard to start because its so intimidating to do a tracklist. My peoples that do the Decades Hat Co. asked me to contribute a mix to commemorate their 19XX hat release, and thats all the motivation I needed. Stoked on this mix. A lot of obvious tracks on here, but a lot of this music is now 20 years old, kind of cool at this point to throw some of the bigger joints on a mix.

Our friend and sometimes mentor Roctakon put together this really fun mix of classic House records for Opening Ceremony, who asked him to put something together to celebrate Party Girl Parker Posey’s bday. Here’s Roc’s description of the mix:
When I was a kid, Party Girl was one of my favorite movies. If you were 16 in 1995, an aspiring DJ, and not-so-closet total dork, Mary would have been everything to you too. I picked songs I know she would have danced to, songs that I really did dance to, and songs that for me define that era. This mix is a tribute to her and to my late teens, where I spent a lot more time as patron than DJ, a lot more time dancing to house music, and a lot more time romanticizing Parker Posey.

Finally! More Bounce music! It’s been waaaay too long since I did the first installment of Bounce It for the Mad Decent Podcast. I’m very happy to say that that mix had a pretty eye-opening effect on a huge population of folks who previously had never heard of New Orleans Bounce Music. I got more then a few emails stating something along the lines of “HOLY CRAP HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS MUSIC EXISTED?!” I’m also happy to report that in recent years, several New Orleans Bounce artists have started to reach outside of New Orleans and do shows across the US, particularly Big Freedia who has been on a tear for the last two years or so. This mix isn’t quite as exhaustive in its coverage of Bounce music and is definitely more focused on my own stuff, but I think it’s a really fun listen from top to bottom. Most of these songs are available for download on Nolabounce.com or on The Bouncespot Soundcloud page and I’ve done my best to provide individual download links where available in the tracklist below.
As always, I really hope y’all enjoy this mix and I encourage every single one of you to visit New Orleans sometime soon. It’s a city unlike any other in the US and even though its come a long way since Katrina, they still need our tourist dollars going in. So, do yourself a favor and go party in New Orleans ASAP!
